At the beginning of class we went over and reviewed the 8 vocabulary words that the students should have completed Friday.
The class then moved on to our next story, The External Frontier.
Before reading the students watched the video clip "The Wonders of the Solar System."
While watching the video the students created a pro/con list of space travel and exploration of outer space. (The students will continue to add to this list as they read through The External Frontier.
After watching the video the students discussed their list with their table group for about 5 minutes.
Then the students opened their text-book to page 438 and read the External Frontier with a partner.
When the students were done reading they stopped and added to their pro/con list before moving on to complete the text-dependent questions for this story.

February 9th:
Before class starts the students will be given back work they have turned in.
Students will put this work into their folder which stays in the classroom.
We will then move on to their next poem they will read, A Little Poem About Spell Checkers.
Independently the students will read the poem then, on a sheet of paper, the students will make a T-chart. On one side they will summarize and come up with the gist of the poem and they will leave the other side blank for the moment.
With a partner the students will discuss their summaries and then answer the question:
"While the author of this poem does not seem to be making a point out right about technology, the form of the poem does make a point about it, What does this poem seem to be saying about humans and spell-checkers, which is a form of technology?"
The students will then, as a class, watch the video "Can we Auto-correct Humanity?" On the other side of the T-chart they began at the beginning of class the students will summarize the video in 2 sentences.
