Today the students continued to add to their Unit 1 vocabulary list.
The students should write the definition in their own words and draw a picture for each word.
For the next two class periods the students will focus on central idea.
Today the students read the article, Heroes Among Us: When Ordinary People Become Extraordinary, and C.U.R.E. (Circle the main idea, Underline important details, Respond in the margins, and Examine vocabulary.)
When the students finished reading and C.U.R.E.ing the article they moved on to complete a central idea bubble map with a partner. (The students have filled out this bubble map before at the beginning of the year)
At the end of the class the students came together and we created a central idea bubble map together on the board.
The students should have a completed bubble map by the end of class.
Homework:
Finish central idea bubble map
Bring device for TOMORROW!
Complete any missing work for ELA. (This Friday is the last day I will take any missing work!!)
Return field trip forms completed to any of the students core teachers.
Any student who did not turn in their project should do so A.S.A.P.!
Continuing to also look at the concept of "Heroes Among Us" the class turned their attention to a TED talk.
The first time the students watched the TED talk video they only listened to what the speaker was saying.
The second time they watched the video with a partner (listed below) the student completed a graphic organizer to help them explore the central idea of the video.
After completing the graphic organizer the students worked together to write an objective summary (using the information in the graphic organizer).
Students should have completed their objective summary with their partner and turned it in.
Together as a class we talked about the objective summaries the students completed.
Tieing in the article from yesterday we compared the central idea's from the two different mediums.
In a nearpod the students contributed and added what they thought the common theme of the article and TED talk was.
After our discussion the students worked on answering their TDQ for the TED talk. Students should complete this handout in complete sentences and should complete the handout for homework if they did not finish.

September 28th:
Today we wrapped up Unit 1: Extraordinary in the ordinary.
Before re-reading The Legendary Snowflake Bentley the students discussed the similarities and difference between snowflakes projected up on the board.
After discussing as a class the students re-read the story with a partner and created a central idea graphic organizer to help organize what the main idea of the story is and the supporting details.
We went over the graphic organizer and the students wrote a perfect paragraph focusing on how the main character was extraordinary.
To wrap up the unit the students wrote 3-5 sentences about why they were extraordinary.
