At the beginning of class students will turn in their mini project.
Any student who does not turn in the project has until Friday 5/18 to turn it in.
As a warm up the students will write a response to the following prompt:
Write down a rule you have broken and how you broke it (DO NOT PUT YOUR NAME)
We will be using these in tomorrows class
Keeping with the idea of utopia's and dystopia's we will read Seven Blind Mice.
While reading the students will answer the question:
How does this story show a utopian society? Use specific textual evidence!
After a short discussion the students will be able to see how this story depicts the basic grounds for a utopian society. In order to get things done and make progress, everyone must have a common vision.
As a class we will come up with a definition for utopia and dystopia.
Quickly with the classmates around them the students will brainstorm what a perfect world might look like vs. a chaotic world.
In The Giver what type of world is portrayed?
At the end of class we will look back in chapter 1 on page 9 at the word 'release'
To begin class we will recap what happened in chapters 1 and 2.
We will also revisit what the word released means.
In groups of 4 the students will be given a few of the rule-breaking responses.
As a group the students will decide which rule-breakers would be released and why.
Each group will be asked to share one of the rule-breaking responses and tell us if they released this person or not and why.
Students will be given 15-20 minutes to read through chapters 3-4.
When they are finished reading they will take what they have learned about Jonas, the main character, so far and conduct a psychiatrist's report on Jonas.
Independently the students will complete the psychiatrist's handout.
If students do not finish they will need to finish for homework.
When students are finished they will have time to read and work on packet #1 which is due Friday.
